BANT is a four-question check of budget, authority, need and timeline used to decide whether a lead is worth selling to. See a scored example.

**What is BANT?**

BANT is a qualification checklist built on four questions: does the buyer have budget, does this person have authority to decide, is there a real need, and is there a timeline. A lead that answers well on all four is usually worth a full sales conversation.

Group: 2. Lists and qualification.

## The parts

1. **Budget**: Can the company pay for a solution like yours, and is money set aside or findable? You are listening for a range, not an exact figure.
2. **Authority**: Is this person the decision maker, or do they influence one? Knowing who else signs off changes how you plan the deal.
3. **Need**: Is there a problem your product solves, and does the buyer feel it today? A need the buyer cannot name is weak.
4. **Timeline**: Is there a date or event that makes a decision happen soon? Without one, deals tend to drift.

## Worked example: two leads at a fleet tracking company

Fleetmark, a fictional fleet tracking company, asks each lead the four BANT questions and counts the ones answered well. Lead one has budget, authority and need but no date. Lead two answered none of them.

1. Lead one answered 3 of 4 well (budget, authority, need), with no timeline yet.
2. Lead two answered 0 of 4 well.
3. Lead one gets a call and a plan to find the timeline; lead two goes back to nurture.

Lead one: 3 of 4 passed

- Done: Budget: a range is set for the year
- Done: Authority: the person signs or co-signs
- Done: Need: the buyer named the problem
- Open: Timeline: a decision date exists

## How to apply it

1. Turn each of the four letters into one plain question you can ask in conversation.
2. Ask the questions across a call, not as a list read out in a row.
3. Record each answer as yes, no or unknown so gaps are visible.
4. Decide in advance how many yes answers send a lead to a seller and how many send it back to nurture.

## Common mistakes

- Reading the four questions like a form, which makes the buyer feel interrogated.
- Treating an unknown answer as a no, when it may only mean you have not asked yet.
- Disqualifying a strong need only because the budget is not confirmed in the first call.

## Questions

### What does BANT stand for?

Budget, authority, need and timeline.

### Does a lead need all four to be worth a call?

Not always. Many teams set a minimum, for example three of four, and let a strong need justify a conversation while the rest is learned.

### Is BANT the only qualification method?

No. Other checklists exist, and teams choose the one that matches how their buyers decide.

### When in the process do you ask BANT questions?

Usually during the first conversation with a development rep or seller, not in a cold message.
